AI and Music

So Suno apparently sucks now because they lost a lawsuit and can no longer use models trained on copyrighted music. The outrage around AI music was a wave that rolled over my head, and at this point in life—most culture war stuff just isn’t worth the attention, on account of being parasite energy in disguise.

Parasite energy in disguise? I'll write more on that another time, but imagine there is a great parasite in the sky that loves to eat human pain, anguish and negative emotions. It loves protests, war, and polarity. This side vs that side. It doesn't care, as long as folks are mad, it eats. Loosh baby. It's all about the loosh. Actually though. For real. Anyway, as a music producer of 13 years, some thoughts incoming…

I messed around with Suno a bit, but it never really spoke to me. It was fun to occasionally make it crap out novelty songs like an “atl style trap song about pooping my pants on a rollercoaster” for some laughs.

Using it as a resource to generate ideas… I get that, but my best ideas just swim into my head and I record them as voice notes. I have thousands of voice notes at this point, so I don’t need AI to connect me to inspo.

The whole “rush to post a metric f-ton of albums in hopes of getting a hit song”… man, if that’s your trip in life, more power to you. I’m sure those guys are bummed that their path to streaming royalties $$ is being shut down (as it should, since it takes from the total pot paid out to all artists). And the people making Suno songs and pretending to be real artists… that’s honestly just funny to me.

On the flip side, that “Take Me to the Moon” song—I couldn’t care less that it is made with AI. It has an amazing hook, regardless of where it came from. To identify it as such, is a skill, same as identifying a good sample. Now, I haven't dug too much into how that song was made, so if it was entirely AI generated… well, that recent lawsuit has handicapped the generative models so…

Will it be a sad day for humanity when AI is good enough to just make every single song be as catchy, dopamine and emotion stimulating as the best song you ever heard? Definitely. Will that tech ever be successfully deployed at mass scale? At the present moment, the answer appears to be no.

At the end of the day, I don’t fw completely generating AI songs and using them to represent yourself as an artist… if you do that, you aren’t an artist. Period.

To me, art is about having human experiences, taking those experiences into ones consciousness and spirit, mulling them over and spitting them back out in some form of medium that expresses the energy that was previously contained internally.

Typing a prompt ain’t that, but also, whatever—people can, should, and will do their thang.

Onward and upward.
